About Oak Harbor
Ben Koetje of Oak Harbor, Washington, started Oak Harbor Transfer, which later became Oak Harbor Freight Lines, in 1916. Oak Harbor Transfer was a Whidbey Island-based cartage company. In 1936, John and Gus Vander Pol paid $600.00 for the little island ferry and acquired its debt. In 1937, their younger brother Henry joined them. The brothers bought another minor carrier, Oak Harbor Freight Lines, in 1942 and consolidated the two enterprises, keeping the latter name.
Over time, the brothers grew the company into a small LTL operation that served a number of counties in Western Washington. Henry bought the company completely in 1974. Edward and David, his two sons, began working alongside their father in the same year.
Oak Harbor began its expansion after the deregulation in 1980, and it is still going strong today. During this time, Oak Harbor Freight Lines grew into a well-known regional LTL carrier. Oak Harbor has established itself as a leading premium service carrier in the west, with many terminals, 1700+ employees, and annual revenues of over $225 million. It provides consistent, high-quality services at competitive (but not the lowest) prices.
