About Port Of Oakland

Oakland International Container Terminal Tracking

In Oakland, California, on the San Francisco Bay, the Port of Oakland is a significant container ship port. It was the first major port on the United States’ Pacific Coast to construct container ship terminals. In 2011, it was the fifth busiest container port in the United States after Long Beach, Los Angeles, Newark, and Savannah. The completion of an intermodal container handling system in 2002 marked the end of a decade of planning and construction that resulted in a high-volume cargo facility that positioned the Port of Oakland for additional growth in the West Coast freight market. In the category of containers, it was ranked 8th in the United States in 2019.

On the east side of San Francisco Bay, the Port of Oakland was founded in 1927. They have pioneered shipping solutions to accelerate the movement of commodities around the world as a world-class international cargo and transportation hub. They continue to be a leader in the port sector, whether it’s by adopting specialized intermodal containers, dredging their channels to handle ever-larger boats, or modernizing neighboring railroad infrastructure for greater efficiencies.

The Civil War, the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, and America’s emergence as a worldwide power occurred throughout the 165-year existence of the port. Captain Thomas Gray, the grandfather of the great dancer Isadora Duncan, was the first to introduce a ferry service to San Francisco. The City of Oakland took over the port from the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1893 and has been in charge of it ever since.

Oakland has grown to become the world’s second-largest container port. Because of excellent leadership and ongoing innovation, the port has retained its importance in the shipping business. They now handle 99 percent of all containerized goods in the Northern California region, making them one of the top ten busiest container ports in the United States. The seaport is responsible for roughly 40% of the port’s regional job creation.
